It was never supposed to be a thing…

It’s not entirely clear why Row Like Pigs was created. A small idea that turned into something much bigger, perhaps. There was no plan for it to ever be seen outside of our boathouse. And certainly no idea that it would ever pique the interest of more than a couple dozen oarsmen.

I suppose it was made because of the kind of boathouse we had. Our boathouse was a place of love, kindness, and inclusion. And, in equal measure, grit, determination, and purpose. And I suppose further that it was made because of the kind of crews we had. Our crews were motley, eclectic, and peculiar. That’s not to mention, overmatched, overlooked, and in over their heads.

The boathouse was home. And the crews were family. The commitment to one another ran deep and fierce. And the movie was simply borne of that commitment. It is an ode to the connectivity and devotion of every team. It is a tribute to each day of every journey embarked upon.

Yes, Row Like Pigs was a bit of an accident. But I couldn’t be prouder that is has endured. I hope it continues to add a touch of inspiration, motivation, and joy to the rowing community.

With Love,

David Shamszad and members of the 2000-2004 Dartmouth crews
